The Bachelor of Science in Optometry (BS-OPT) at Dubai Medical University is a four-year program designed to prepare primary eye-care professionals capable of examining vision, detecting ocular disorders, and supporting the prevention and management of visual impairment. The program integrates strong foundations in biomedical sciences with specialized training in optical science, vision assessment, ocular health, and clinical optometric practice.

During the first two years, students build essential knowledge in biology, chemistry, physics, anatomy and physiology, microbiology, and pharmacology, while developing professional competencies in communication, research, and healthcare ethics. Students are introduced to the fundamentals of optometry, including geometrical and visual optics, ocular anatomy and physiology, and the principles of optometric examination and binocular vision. Laboratory sessions provide hands-on training in visual optics and basic clinical assessment techniques.

In Year 3, the curriculum advances into specialized optometric topics such as ophthalmic lenses and dispensing, diagnostic instrumentation, ocular diseases, ocular pharmacology, visual perception, and optometric care across different age groups. Practical laboratories strengthen students’ clinical examination skills and their ability to use diagnostic equipment and vision assessment technologies.

The final year focuses on advanced optometric practice and extensive supervised clinical training in eye-care clinics and healthcare settings. Students also study areas such as contact lenses, community eye care, myopia management, and low-vision rehabilitation. Through these experiences, graduates develop the technical competence, clinical reasoning, and professional confidence required to deliver high-quality vision care and contribute to multidisciplinary healthcare teams.
